The suprapictorialist image transcends traditional painting because it no longer conceives painting as a negation of the wall. It creates expressive elements between the canvas and the wall, thus no longer limiting the expressiveness of the frame. Suprapictorialism works with two pairs: figure-ground and canvas-wall. Therefore, we have two levels of imagery: one within the painting and another between the painting and the wall. The suprapictorialist image expands traditional expressiveness.
