From my perspective, the 20th century (in the world of Art) can be divided in two major stages. The first leap was made by the first avant-garden (developed in Paris) where the main focus was on moving away from mimetic representation (product of the invention of photography in 1836) The second great leap occurred in New York after WWII, where art moved from non-mimetic representation to the development of the abstract personal imagen.
